More women have excessive facial hair growth than people might expect. This isn't a cause for alarm, because it frequently appears as a side effect of aging. However, it helps for women to understand when it becomes a nuisance.

For instance, if a woman's mother or father had a stage of excessive hair growth, she will more likely inherit the same condition.

Not many people have heard of a medication for hair removal, but prescription drugs exist to deal with these sudden changes in hair growth. One prescription, Vaniqa, is a topical lotion that can reduce the growth rate of unwanted facial hair on women.

Vaniqa, also known as eflornithine hydrochlorine, is not a miracle cure to completely remove unwanted facial hair. Instead, it slows the growth of facial hair by interfering with an enzyme needed for hair growth in the follicles of the skin. Hair growth should decrease within eight weeks. Thus, women won't have to shave or wax nearly as often.

A number of side effects could be caused by Vaniqa. The most common side effect is an outbreak of acne, but a person's skin might also have an allergic reaction to Vaniqa. This can result in rashes, sever itching and swelling of the face.

The worst side effect is folliculitis, which is the irritation of the follicle itself. This can lead to a skin infection. According to mayoclinic.com, even mild forms of folliculitis result in the scarring around the follicules. The organisms that cause folliculitis could also spread to other parts of the body. If anyone gets folliculitis from the medication, they should definitely ask the doctor for antibiotics to treat the infected areas.
